MONSTERS

So here it is. "Monsters". Don't know when it'll be making it's appearance in the Megazine, but when it does I'll be sure to alert people as to where they can get a copy.

I based the lead man in this story very loosely on Terry Wogan (circa 1982). A sort of Kung Fu fighting all action Wogan if you like. The over all world this is set in was inspired by shows like The Avengers, The Champions, Danger Man and maybe a little Jason King. I really got into drawing sideburns and dodgy hair styles and it's safe to say (as I drew this back in February and am still drawing sideburns and dodgy hair styles to this very day) it left its mark.

  1. Yup, that's pretty damn excellent.
For some reason it feels like it's part of a bigger story, be nice to see more. Always nice to see more.

  9. Your wish is my command, it's up now, I place it alongside such fine works as 'I drink Your Blood' and 'Psychomania'.

  10. "The Mighty Skullboy Army" was my fave too.

As for Tor, no, your imagination, but I like it so I'll say yes and that it was planned all along.

As for a Wild Talents series. hmmm, not sure about that. A graphic novel is more likely. A graphic novel that may not even feature Chimes and Mundi as the central characters but an all new cast...

    Who knows.

  13. Man alive, you’re quite the jack of all trades, Mr. Culbard. Splendid Comic. That finale image of the winged monster standing before the sunrise is brilliant!

Hey! for once replying to your blog didn't freeze my browser so I can posthere instead of pestering you with an email!
That list of TV shows push all the right buttons for me and stylistically it's like a breath of fresh air! Reminds me of Zombie World from Dark Horse, the first mini series, kinda Tin Tin-esque, basically nice, clean and European.

That old ladies house isn't on Craggy Island is it?

  16. No, the old lady's house is 'local'.

Glad you like. I LOVE Zombie World.

  17. Zombie World was total genius, wish Pat Mckeown did more comics, anyone seen his strip in Dark Horse Book of the Dead? Brilliant stuff.

Beyond the original Mckeown and Mignola mini, were other Zombie World comics of the same standard and follow the same characters, or where they just stories in a world of zombies?
Will have to check out Dark Horses Book of the Dead, no doubt another stellar recommendation from Paul.

  19. It's a great book, honest.
The Zombie World series was a bit hit and miss I thought. Bob Fingerman's 'Winer's Dregs' was good and the two one shot's were fun with Pat Mills not quite concluding storyline reading like a 'Toxic' cast off. I think as a series it deviated from the first story too much. I'd've rather seen a continuing story from Mignola and McKeown or other new zombie comics. Just MHO of course! Mentioned it before elsewhere but a nice looking zombie comic's coming out in a few months by Bob Fingerman called 'Recess Pieces', should be worth a look.

  20. Felt like the surface was only ever lightly scratched, Zombie World, with the M&M original miniseries (which likewise I adored!) The following stuff set in the same universe was dissappointing IMO. Wish they'd pursued it but I gues Mike M was pretty busyw with a certain shaven-horned tomato coloured superdevil.

  21. I rather liked Deadworld when that was doing the rounds all those years ago.
